 Medical Infectious Waste Packing Instructions

Guidelines: For packing Medical Infectious Waste for transport

By Law- Generators are responsible for packaging their waste. For the safety of yourself and our employees please follow these helpful hints on how to package your waste properly

All medical waste that is collected for disposal must be placed in an approved biohazard corrugated box, or polyethylene medical waste tub, which is lined with a red bio plastic bag 3 Mil (liner). This is normally provided with your medical waste service. Remove air from bag, close and tie in a single not, and completely enclose within the container to prevent odor and leakage. The box must be securely closed at top and bottom with 2" packing tape, or the lid for the tub must be securely snapped closed.

Boxes do carry a nationally recognised weight limit of 40lbs, but these limits could be different from state to state. By Law, boxes should not be loaded to a point of making it unsafe to transport.

Waste shall not be compacted by manual or mechanical means. Waste will not treat properly and could require a second treatment. This could lead to an additional charge for handling of waste by treatment facility.

For pathological waste, the preservative agent should be decanted prior to placement in the container.

Medical Waste does not include mercury or mercury containing items, formaldehyde, chemicals, solvents or hazard waste. If you have mercury or other hazardous waste, please contact a hazardous waste division so that we may assist you on proper disposal of this type of waste.

  1. Sharps must be placed in special puncture resistant containers. Sharps include the following items:

Blades, Lancets, Finger Pricks
IV Bags with Tubing and Needles
Disposable Surgical Instruments
Fragile Glassware
All syringes, even if unused or without needles
Any item that could cause a cut or puncture

  1. Make sure all sharps container lids are closed and locked before putting in the medical waste container. Additionally, putting medical tape over the container lid will assist in preventing accidental spills during transport.

IMPORTANT:

These packaging guidelines are just that, guidelines based upon state and federal laws and regulations for the transportation of medical waste. Some jurisdictions may have more stringent or less stringent regulations; rules do change from time to time. Secure Waste, Inc. will not assume responsibility in whole or in part for any information provided in this document. For more information please review rules and regulations provided by DOT, OSHA, and your STATE and LOCAL GOVERNMENTS.
